Welcome to the Q3 2026 edition of the DPAC newsletter — our quarterly look at drone events, news and regulation across Canada, covering July through September 2026. Highlights this quarter:
- NPA 2026-005 consultation — Transport Canada held six English and French information sessions on proposed changes covering remote identification, community-based organizations and designated drone airspace. The published consultation deadline fell on September 9.
- Wildfire airspace — Transport Canada reported unauthorized drones near wildfires and reiterated the 9.3 km restriction, with administrative penalties up to $3,000 for individuals and $15,000 for corporations. Québec’s SOPFEU issued its own advisory, noting restrictions can expand by NOTAM.
- First three Pre-Validated Declaration acceptance letters — a letter accepts a manufacturer’s proposed approach to demonstrating compliance; it does not establish that the aircraft already meets Standard 922, nor does it automatically authorize operations.
- Drone pesticide application — Health Canada approved drone application for pesticides already cleared for conventional aerial application.
- Transport Canada numbers (as of August 14, 2026) — 122,945 registered drones, 23,427 Advanced Pilot Certificates, 709 Level 1 Complex Pilot Certificates and 615 active RPAS Operator Certificates. These measure different things and should not be added together.
- DPAC Safety Course in French — the revised course went live online on August 5.
- Police drone programs expanded — drone-as-first-responder launches in Red Deer and a 90-day Calgary trial, new units in Saanich and Saugeen Shores, and a long list of searches, arrests and collision investigations assisted by RCMP and municipal drone operators.
- Federal uncrewed-systems push — $29.6 million for an Espace Aéro-led hub in Mirabel, the Defence Drone Initiative and its Marketplace, Canada–Ukraine cooperation, tactical ISR contracts to Volatus and Draganfly, and the Royal Canadian Navy’s first flight of the CU179 Peregrine.
- Drone Expo 2026 (August 29) — live demonstrations, six talks including “Common Mistakes Made by Pilots” with Jean Lamoureux, and an enclosed FPV race course.
